The Discipline and Abilities Systems of The Matrix Online

An Introduction

Downloading superhuman Abilities, knowledge, and expertise at the blink of an eye was one of the most compelling aspects of the Matrix trilogy. Whether learning Kung Fu like an accomplished Grand Master or understanding the schematics of an industrial power plant, downloading knowledge and Abilities directly into the brain allowed the rebels from Zion to survive and succeed in the hostile environments of the Matrix.

Whether by stealth, cunning, or brute force, obtaining information is the surest way to survive inside of the Matrix. As a newly awakened redpill in The Matrix Online, the technology to instantly download Abilities and Disciplines into your mind will be yours to harness and control. But first, you must find, buy, trade for, or discover this code on your own.

The Matrix Online Discipline Tree

In The Matrix Online, Abilities are categorized under specialty groups called “Disciplines”. There are over 70 Disciplines in the Matrix ranging from Kung Fu Master to Network Attacker. Each Discipline is comprised of six to eight individual Abilities, many trainable for maximum power and effect.

Every redpill operating within the Matrix begins with the introductory Awakened Discipline which grants access to a wide variety of basic Abilities and powers. Once these skills are mastered, three primary branches of Disciplines become available: Coder, Hacker, and Operative. These three major trees lead into every other Discipline in the game.

Here is a brief overview of each major Discipline tree.

The Coder
The Coder branch presents in-depth knowledge about the actual code of the Matrix itself. This knowledge allows redpills the Abilities to create and modify items inside of the Matrix. If you enjoy using pets in combat or love crafting things... click here.

The Hacker
The Hacker branch grants an understanding of how to alter the code of the Matrix for one’s own purposes, with a variety of illicit programs and utilities. If you are looking for healing skills or the Abilities to downgrade or harm enemies from afar… click here.

The Operative
The Operative branch allows for the mastery of Abilities related to both ranged and melee combat as well as stealth maneuvers. If you want to learn Kung-Fu fighting, be a Sniper, or practice the secret life of the Assassin... click here.

Branching Out

While these three Disciplines provide gateways to the larger Discipline Tree, they do not strictly define a redpill’s specific role or advancement choices within the Matrix. The system is designed to give players the freedom to specialize in a specific branch of the Discipline Tree, choose pieces from a multitude of branches, or do anything in between. In fact, you may find that there are several Abilities in different branches that complement each other so well, that it is a shame not to use them together. Inside of The Matrix Online, a redpill can customize their Abilities loadouts to an extremely diverse degree.

Of course, it is not quite as simple as just choosing any Abilities at random and using it—there is a natural limitation involving which Abilities can be chosen and used in which order, hence the “Tree” model.

Each Abilities represents a small piece of knowledge. In some cases these small pieces (often the most specialized ones) cannot be fully understood without the knowledge preceding it. For example, Sally wants to use the Abilities “Logic Blast 1.0”, which allows her to launch a damaging virus at her enemies. Yet this Abilities would not be of any use unless her basic Hacker Abilities “Execute Program” was also loaded, allowing her to actually use the tool that launches a virus at attackers and have some chance of hitting in the first place. This sort of interconnection is part of the fabric of the Matrix.

However, it doesn’t prevent Sally from also choosing to give herself some Abilities from the Operative Discipline branch, taking “Combat Insight” and “Hindering Shot” so that she can root her enemy in place for a moment in order to land “Logic Blast 1.0”! The combinations one can put together are truly only limited by the amount of memory space your redpill has available, which will be discussed more in a moment.

The Code Archive is Your Best Friend

Abilities are collected as pieces of code, and because of this, your redpill’s personal Code Archive becomes a critical resource. The Code Archive’s purpose is twofold. On one hand, it is rather like a bank, allowing the storage of resource materials such as code bits and fragments, and unused Abilities Codes. Storing these pieces of code is very important at higher levels, as they might be lost if they are in your redpill’s inventory on death. On the other hand, the Code Archive can also be seen as a library that contains all the combat, crafting, and tactical Abilities you have collected. Before your redpill jacks into the Matrix, you need to examine your Code Archive to see what Abilities you would like to use, and then upload them into memory. The Code Archive allows each Abilities Code to be loaded and unloaded an infinite number of times, so you need not worry about wear and tear.

Load ‘em Up, Move ‘em Out

The selection of Abilities your redpill loads into memory for use prior to jacking in is called the “loadout”, and this becomes the foundation of your survival once inside the Matrix. The number of Abilities in the loadout is determined by your redpill’s memory capacity. Because Abilities come in the form of code, each one has an associated memory cost. A newly awakened redpill begins with a small memory capacity. However, as they gain experience within the Matrix, redpills will increase their level of proficiency with using loaded Abilities. As their level increases, so too will their memory capacity, making it possible for more Abilities to be included in a loadout and rending the character more effective and/or versatile.

It is important to note that while some Abilities utilize only one block of memory, there are Abilities that require more memory space to load, and of course there are the various dependencies in the tree to consider as well. So while you can store a wide variety of Abilities within the Code Archive, it is your character’s memory capacity that ultimately defines how it will function in gameplay. With that in mind, you must take care when creating a loadout in order to maximize your redpill’s effectiveness within the Matrix.

Enhancing Your Redpill’s Abilities

Another feature of the Discipline Tree is the fact that each Abilities has an associated level. Though some of those Abilities cannot be improved beyond level 1, many of them can become significantly more powerful by upgrading them with additional $Information collected from the Matrix. These level advancements will remain with that Abilities Code even when it is loaded out of memory. Level advancement of Abilities Codes will not only increase their value and effectiveness, there will be times when an Abilities must reach a specific level before you can utilize the next Abilities in the tree.

The Final Analysis:

One of the unique aspects of The Matrix Online Discipline Tree system is that players have the opportunity to access every Abilities Code available in the game. Though players are limited in how many Abilities they can load into their minds at one time, various load out combinations may be utilized by visiting the Loading Area, or any Hardline.

Being able to tailor Abilities on the fly to suit the tasks at hand affords players within the game an unprecedented flexibility in playstyles and tactics. In this kind of environment, players can truly interact and experience the Matrix on their own terms.
