News: The Coder Discipline

The Coder has taken the first steps to understand how to shape and form the code of the Matrix into useful items and obedient followers. While not as offensively powerful as the Operative or as versatile as the Hacker, the Coder's ability to create items and summon simulacra lets him hold his own in any group.

“I don't even see the code. All I see is...blond, brunette, red-head...” – Cypher, The Matrix

Main Abilities:

Strengths:

  • Able to summon a simulacra, which is a loyal follower who will fight for the Coder
  • Excellent for solo play (being that you have a built-in team)
  • Can craft basic items

Weaknesses:

  • Weaker in combat than either of the other base disciplines
  • Item creation is very tool-reliant

Play Styles:

Solo play:

The Coder is one of the most effective characters for soloing at lower levels, because with the ability Remote Proxy 1.0 you essentially become a two-person group all by yourself. At this level, one of two soloing strategies may be used:

  1. Send your pet into melee combat to act as a tank, absorbing damage and keeping enemies distracted while you fire at them from range.
  2. Set your pet to defensive tactics and go into close combat yourself, while the proxy fires to support and cover you.

Either strategy is equally effective at lower levels. Once you begin to go up in level and specialize further, you will want to build your strategy around the type of simulacra you choose to summon, as all disciplines in this section of the tree rely heavily upon pets to be successful in combat.

Group play:

A Coder and his simulacra are always a welcome addition to any group. The simulacra brings an extra body to a fight, spreading the damage from enemies out among more targets. Also, the Coder's Tinkering ability creates a nice area-of-effect "grenade" that can be used to damage clusters of enemies all at once.

Main Abilities:

Write Code (Awakened 1)
This ability allows you to take code bits and create code fragments, then combine code fragments to create codes for numerous useful items. The more you increase this ability the more schematics you will gain access to.

Tinkering (Write Code 1)
The Coder will be able to create and throw small viral packets that explode on contact, delivering a damaging viral payload to all enemies within 2 meters of the target.

Remote Proxy 1.0 (Write Code 1)
Shape the code of the Matrix to create a simulacrum to fight for you. For best effect, you should identify your preferred playing style and how it fits with other abilities you have in your loadout. For example, as a pure Coder or Coder/Hacker you will most likely feel safer letting the simulacra fight toe to toe while you use Tinkering and ranged attacks from afar. A Coder/Operative, however, may prefer going into close combat while the simulacra provides support with ranged fire. Try out these different styles at lower levels and keep them in mind as you advance to higher disciplines.

Repair Simulacra (Remote Proxy 1.0)
When your simulacra takes some damage, be sure to quickly repair it. The longer you can keep it fighting, the safer you will be.

Minor Repairs (Tinkering)
Use Minor Repairs to repair your items' code and keep them in tip-top shape. No one wants their items to fall apart in the worse possible moment.

Coder (Remote Proxy 1.0, Write Code 2, Tinkering)
Whenever you "die" within the Matrix, all your currently loaded items risk losing some stability. With the Coder ability, your items are less likely to suffer a stability loss upon death.

Looking Forward:

The Coder discipline leads you to either the Programmer discipline or the Code Shaper discipline. As a Programmer you'll learn more abilities that focus on the creation of new codes as well as learning how to take apart items you find to salvage their component parts. As a Code Shaper, you will be able to summon more powerful simulacra and will learn new ways to enhance them into even more useful allies.

Complementary Disciplines:

Solo:

The Coder discipline is effective in any combination. The ability to summon a simulacra is an incredibly useful ability and all disciplines can take advantage of it.

Grouping:

Coders do well paired up with anyone. Grouped with a Hacker, the simulacra can be set to provide frontline protection, while the Coder and the Hacker attack from afar. Pairing with an Operative allows the Operative to shoulder less of the frontline combat and helps the group take on larger enemies or groups of enemies more easily.

Minimum Level: 1

Hints and Tips:

Be very careful when you set your simulacra to "aggressive". You never know what fight it will bring to you.

You may encounter some useful rare items scattered across the Matrix that you'll collect. Use Minor Repairs to keep them functional.
